Elgin City v Queen's Park

The 13s fifth league game of the season took us north to sunny Elgin passing through some glorious scenery along the way. We have visited this part of the country many times over the years and are always given a warm friendly welcome. The lads were all looking forward to the game and had a full squad to choose from.

The first period started brightly with both teams trying to adjust to the bumpy dry pitch which certainly tested their technique and ball reception.

Queen's usual 1-4-4-2 formation was working well but some of the fluency wasn't quite there as in previous games and this was down to the opposition pressing the ball well and some of our passing/decision making.

Scott Whyte the Queen's goalkeeper had very little to do as the defence held firm with Ryan Clark, David Brownlie, Jordan Quinn and Stephen Caw. Jaimie Gallagher and Dominic Boland were controlling possession in the midfield which was allowing Louie and Jay to penetrate in the wider areas linking with Ryan Smith and the impressive Ben Mulholland.

Stephen Caw and Jordan Quinn were supporting from deeper areas and passed the ball well when in possession. The first period Queen's scored a couple of good goals and also conceded at the other end and again we will need to work on defending better as a team on the training field.

The second period we made some changes with the rotational policy we incorporate at the club, James Beattie and Chris Scott sparked some life into Queen's and James was beginning to test the Elgin defence with his skill on the ball committing defenders 1v1.

Queens scored a further couple of goals but also conceded again.

The third period Queen's showed a good level of fitness and dominated most of the period and scored further goals. The scorers on the day were Jay Hudson, Ryan Smith, Ben Mulholland and best of all was a sweet strike from Liam Reid.

It was a long but memorable journey and all the parents/ players along with the coaching staff had a good journey home, Chris Scott was nominated by his team mates as worst singer, personally we thought there was more than 1 !

Coach Iain Rennie commented 'Both teams put on a good show and considering the journey the attitude and spirit of both teams was excellent, well done'.
