Partick Thistle v Queen's Park

The 14s returned to SFA Youth Initiative duty on Sunday for a Glasgow derby against Partick Thistle. The venue, at Petershill, gave the many spectators shelter from the wet weather in the 'Peasy' stand and the surface allowed for slick, flowing football to keep them entertained.

Queen's started brightly, with players eager to get on the ball, creating chances but being unable to force the ball home. Thistle quickly reacted to the threat posed by O'Donnell giving him the man marking treatment but to his credit he was still able to dictate the play from his role off the front.

Queen's were now in control of the game, and following a nine pass sequence they were rewarded with the first goal from the excellent McDonald. Further goals were to follow. Fantastic skill from Newlands followed by a composed finish, along with a cool, intelligent finish after a dynamic burst from midfield from Caldwell.

A good start to the season with obvious pleasing aspects of play and areas for further improvement.

The coaches were delighted with the manner of the play commenting, 'great to score a couple of real 'team' goals, involving numerous players and passes and always good to see midfield players chipping in with the finishing touches. Also good to see the boy's frustration at not being able to hold out for a clean sheet. Adapting these feelings into hard work on the training ground can only bode well for the season and the boy's continued development as players'.
