Friday 12th March 2010
On a mild Friday night Queen's Park 15s made the trip down the M77 to play Ayr United in a rearranged fixture from last year. This would be a stern test for the Queen's boys, with Ayr being a very tidy side.
The game started at a very frantic pace, with both teams up for the challenge ahead. The matched was pretty well balanced in the first period with both getting the ball down and playing football.
Queen's had a few shots on the Ayr goal but they were either off target or straight at the Ayr keeper, who dealt with them quite comfortably.
Ayr Utd also had a few shots on target; one of these shots produced a great save from Queen's Park keeper Cammy Sinclair, down at his right hand post.
Both teams created chances during this period but it would remain goalless.
Queen's Park came flying out the traps for the second period and quickly dictated the play. As in the Stranraer game the previous Sunday, the 15s were keeping possession well and spreading the play around the pitch.
It would be Queen's Park who would come closest to scoring. After some good possession play the ball was played to Craig Johnston. He created himself a couple of yards (a metre to the young ones) outside the penalty and lashed a shot against the post.
5mins later it would be Craig who broke the deadlock, with good play down the left from Mickey, Aiden and Raymondo. With his back to goal the ball held up by Mickey, he then played a wonderful back heel into the path of Craig who took one touch and fired the ball low past the Ayr keeper.
The rest of this period was controlled by Queen's who were playing some really wonderful football. Although there were no more goals in the period Queen's football was making up for it.
The third period was to be no different in terms of Queen's Park’s football it was a joy. This period would see the 15s score another couple of goals without reply.
The first of these would come from the head of Lawzza Shankland who rose above everyone to meet a well-delivered Connor McGuiness free kick.
It would be Connor who scored a goal for Queens Park. He hit a shot from the edge of the box with his right foot, which the keeper got down to save but he could only push it away. Connor had continued his run into the box and smashed the ball home with his left foot, a goal well deserved for his display on the night.
No more goals but a great display from Queens Park.
Queen's coaches commented "The last hour of the game was some of the best football we have played this season. This display was another step up from what they produced last weekend at Lesser against Stranraer. It is always pleasing as coaches when at the intervals your instructions are more of the same please. Credit also has to go to our 2 keepers Ryan and Cammy, who all through these displays have always remained focused and ready when called upon, and no you can’t go on up front".
