Sunday 14th March 2010
Queen's Park 15s were up early as they prepared to travel to Dumfries for their 12 o’clock KO against Queen of the South. It was a beautiful Sunday morning at the Abbey Vale ground with a strong wind present. Queen's coaches wanted a continuation of the performance that was displayed on Friday night against Ayr Utd, high tempo, concentration and good combination play. Queen's welcomed trialists Jack Murphy, Kyle Fitzpatrick and Lewis Jamieson with Jack starting at right back.
The 15s started the game well by creating opportunities in front of goal. They adjusted well to the grass pitch that tested their ball reception.
The first period belonged to Queen's who had most of the possession though there was no end product for their good play.
However this was all to change in the second period as Queen's opened the scoring immediately from the kick off. Raymond Lynch showed good vision by cleverly playing a pass over the top for Lawrence Shankland to beat the last defender and round the goalkeeper to finish, showing good composure.
Kyle Fitzpatrick entered the play on the right side of midfield and made an immediate impact to have a hand in possibly the goal of the season to date. From their keepers kick out Craig Marshall won the header, Connor McGuiness due to his good first touch played an early ball out to the right for Kyle to run onto and sweetly deliver a precision cross for Aiden Connolly to race from wide left into the edge of their penalty box to volley home. Fantastic build up, superb cross and a sublime finish!!
This spurred Queen's on as they demonstrated maturity in their play, patient build up play maintaining good possession and then explode into Queen of the South penalty area.
Queen's were having the majority of the ball and from a good through pass by David Murray saw Craig Johnston continue his magnificent scoring rate by rounding the keeper to coolly find the back of the net.
The 15s continued to dominate the game and should’ve added to the score line.
Queen’s coaches Gerry O’Kane and John Jackson were happy with this performance commenting "This was our third consecutive clean sheet which is very satisfying. Some of our combination play was great today; the variation in our play and our decision making today was pleasing. Another excellent display from Connor McGuiness. Well done Connor".
