Queen's Park v Queen of the South

Queen's Park 15s welcomed Queen of the South to Lesser Hampden on a bitterly cold and wet Friday evening. Queen's reverted back to playing 1 4 4 2 formation for this game.

Queen's started the game at a high tempo and dictated the play with good one/two touch passing with good movement off the ball. Chances were being created but Queen of the South’s backline defended very well.

David Murray was driving down the right side, stretching their midfield and causing a goal threat with some great deliveries into the box. For the first period the away team were struggling to get out of their own half.

The second period was much the same however Queen of the South were gaining limited periods of possession. Queen's was still passing the ball well but just couldn’t seem to convert any of these goal opportunities. Would it be a frustrating night?

The third period saw Queen's Park produce some of their best football of the season; it was a joy to watch as the rain pelted down. Both full backs were pushing forward as Queen's switched the play creating spaces. Link up play was excellent as our midfield supported the strikers and was duly rewarded when a cross was whipped in for Lawrence Shankland to ghost in between their central defenders to place a downward header into the bottom corner. A second followed soon after as the ball was crossed in from the left for Lawrie McKay to volley home.

Queens’ coaches were pleased with this performance "This was a good Queen of the South team that we played tonight so we had to be at our best. Credit must go to all of our players to produce a performance like that; our play was entertaining and played at very high tempo throughout. It’s also noted that our goalkeeper always started the play with the back four, didn’t kick it up once...well done!".
