The 16s headed north with an impressive run of four straight league wins under their belt. A depleted squad of 14 players as injury and illness took hold meant today's game against County would prove a stiff test.
Queen's started the game with a new diamond formation in midfield. Possession and patience would prove important as the opposition were bigger and competitive. Andy Mclachlan had a good early chance after good work down the right side by Kris Gebbie but shot wide of the post.
Ross County opened the scoring from a wide free kick and their defender sent a looping header over the Queen's keeper to back post. Slightly against run of play but it made the 16s more determined to get back into the game.
Kyle Macbeth scored shortly after with a deliberate cross/shot when he saw the keeper off his line from wide of the box. Although Queen's were dictating play Ross County still looked dangerous and they scored after poor marking in the box allowed their striker to fire past Queen's keeper Craig Gordon - who was to play an influential part in the game when he was sent on as an emergency striker.
In the second half Queen's performance improved when they kept passing through the midfield with McVey, Mclachlan, Robertson and Gebbie causing problems. A 'stramash' in the opposition box from our corner kick brought a goal for Queen's with Rainey trying an overhead kick for it to break to Gebbie who struck a sweet shot through a mass of bodies!
Queen's now looked the likelier team to win with Whelan, out of position, doing well up front and linking well with Macbeth and Gordon. Queen's third came from a quick throw in from, Pat, who fed Robertson inside left, Whelan played a one/two in behind for Robertson to play a 'Giggs' like cross for Gordon to tap the ball home which sparked wild celebrations amongst the players.
Coach Graham Connell commented 'Our long journey was rewarded with a gritty team performance today. The players determination and hard work reflects their level of commitment to the squad. Now players, coaches and parents can enjoy a nice journey home'.
