Sunday 6th December 2009
A chilly Sunday morning at Lesser Hampden and the 16’s were all set for their final league fixture of the year against Arbroath.
Queen’s started brightly, passing the ball well. The front two of Tyler McGuigan and Andy McLachlan were causing the Arbroath back line problems with their pace, power and link up play with the midfield, where Connor McVey and Robert Whelan were controlling the play.
The breakthrough however, came from a well worked corner. Gary Duggan and Ryan Bennett combined with the latter drilling home from the edge of the box. A great start! Bennett was constantly causing problems down the right hand side and delivered several good crosses but Queen’s just couldn’t get on the end of them.
Queen’s were then awarded a penalty after hand ball in the area by the Arbroath full back. Ryan Bennett stepped up and confidently slotted it home for his and Queen’s second.
Arbroath came back into the game as the first half drew to a close and got their rewards with a well worked goal. Queen’s failed to stop the cross into the box and the Arbroath forward headed home.
Queen’s started the second half positively and it wasn’t long before they converted one of the chances. A good move down the right hand side and the ball was cut back for Tyler McGuigan, who curled it round the keeper.
Queen’s should have gone on from here to score a few more but Arbroath came back again. They pressured Queen’s back line for a period with Craig Gordon called into action on two occasions. Arbroath were then awarded a penalty which they duly converted, to set up a tense last 10 minutes, but Queen’s held on.
Queen’s coach Mark McCarney "A good performance overall, with some good play in the first half. Encouraging signs with a couple of stand out individual performances".
