Clyde arrived at Lesser Hampden on Friday night for the Glasgow derby having been the only team to beat the Queen's 16s in the first half of the season. Queen's were determined to reverse the previous result and get a victory over their Glasgow rivals.
The 16sstarted well and dominated possession, playing some slick passing football linking well from midfield to attack causing the Clyde rear-guard problems.
Queen's threatened every time they went forward. However it was Clyde who took the lead. Once again it was slack defending that cost Queen's dearly .
A lack of communication and poor positioning by the Queen's back four let a ball be played through for the Clyde striker. He was left one on one with the Queen's keeper, Craig Gordon, and he finished well leaving Craig with no chance of stopping the goal. It was a familiar story for Queen's as they have been loosing soft goals all season. But it wasn't to dampen their spirits.
Queen's were patient and continued to play their attractive passing game forcing several corners. The midfield pairing of Chris Gebbie and Connor McVey were causing real problems with their strong runs from midfield and it was Gebbie who got the goal that Queen's deserved. He picked the ball up 35 yards out, drove into the space and struck a low accurate shot, hard into the bottom left corner. It was a great strike and all the more pleasing as the boys had been working on their shooting in the previous training sessions.
The half ended with the scores level and Queen's with their tails up!
It was much of the same in the second half as Queen's pressed hard for the winner. Again some confident and assured passing kept Clyde on the back foot for much of the second half.
Changes were made to freshen up the game and to their credit this didn't effect the Queen's rhythm. Winger Gary Duggan picked up the ball on the left and came inside to strike a fierce short which crashed off the crossbar.
This was an indication of things to come! Queen's went ahead shortly after with a superb team move. Left back BJ Coll plucked the ball out the air superbly and fed the ball to the midfield. the ball was quickly played to the wide area for Duggan to pick up. He flighted the ball into striker Tyler Mcguigan who held the ball up brilliantly, delaying his pass as Gary Duggan ran on to support. McGuigan slid the ball in to Duggan and from a tight angle he smashed the ball high into the corner of the net.
It was no more than Queen's deserved but the were made to sweat as Clyde pushed for the equaliser. 15s keeper Ritchie made two fine stops to keep the boys ahead and see out a very satisfying win over their Glasgow rivals.
Coach Andy Armour said " This game has been a long time coming as the boys were disappointed in their performance and result last time out. It was a good squad performance with some excellent individual displays. The boys showed great desire and a willingness to work for each other which was particularly pleasing".
