16 SQUAD…

16s Squad

The 16s squad play in the combined 16/17s Scottish Football Association Youth Initiative League. This league is designed to develop boys' individual skills and tactical awareness within a non-competitive environment.

Each game is divided into three periods of thirty minutes. Rolling substitutions are allowed to be made and each player will play an equal amount of time over the season. What this means is that a player might play two period in one game and one period in the next. Over the entire season players should have played an equal amount of time. Careful records are kept to ensure this happens.

Tactical awareness plays a much bigger role at this stage of development. Players should by now have a detailed understanding of their individual strengths and weaknesses. Now they need to be able to play a specific role with a team. Coaches will work with players on how they can work within a specific formation.

Sports science plays a bigger role at this age group. There is regular testing of players to monitor their fitness, power and strength. Players and their parents age given advice on diet and nutrition. Players are monitored on strength, power and flexibility and individual programmes are devised to correct any deficits.

Queen's Park youth players also have access to the first team physiotherapist Bob Findlay who will treat any injuries sustained throughout the season. The club doctor, Alan Hutchison, takes a keen interest in the youth teams also helps with diagnosis of injuries.

The 16s play against other senior clubs throughout Scotland. Under the terms of the SFA Youth Initiative League we are not allowed to report the scores of the matches. However we will provide summaries of matches highlighting the key points of progress the boys are making.

The coaches for the 16s squad this season are; Marco McIntyre, Paul McLean, George Watson & Paul Ronald.
