36 hours after beating Celtic at Lennoxtown, the 17s arrive at Murray Park. How would our young players' legs be feeling? Would they be tired or sore?
Rangers took the game to Queen's at a terrific pace and the 17s struggled to get to grip with the ball for a while. Once Queen's settled in and the boys got a feel for the ball they moved it about the grass well and enjoyed huge chunks of possession. They also restricting Rangers to long shots and set pieces as their only real attempts on goal - 0-0 at half time.
With it being pre season, Queen's coaches shuffled the pack for the second half. This helped Rangers as they took control of the game for a good 15 minutes. Would Friday's exploits come back to haunt the tired legs of the young Queen's players?
The above concern was answered by a counter attack by Queen's tearing down the left wing, into box, rounding the Rangers goalkeeper and slotting into the net with no fewer than two Rangers defenders desperately trying to keep ball out with them ending in the net with the ball - 1-0 to Queen's Park.
Rangers looked shocked as soon after Queen's created other good opportunities to increase their lead. With this the game was very open and with Rangers pushing hard to get a result from this game, the Ibrox side threw all they could at Queen's goal. They eventually scored a good goal for them with 5 minutes to go.
Rangers had the ascendancy. Their greater strength and fitness was beginning to tell. They peppered the Queen's goal for the remainder of the match. The young Queen's side stood firm and the Queen's goalkeeper pulled off two super saves to deny Rangers the winning goal.
Even under this pressure Queen's still created and could have sneaked a winner in the final minutes. The game finished 1-1. A draw for Queen's being a fair result for their efforts.
Coach Paul Ronald commented " A great weekend's workout for the boys. They proved even at this early stage in the pre-season they can compete with the best in the country and play excellent passing football. Well done boys".
