Queens 17s entertained Airdrie United today at Lesser Hampden. The young Hampden squad were eager to get some goals and a win. They had been up beat with the recent result at Hearts. Can they perform at that level again?
Queen's started on the front foot and took the game quickly to Airdrie creating some good opportunities to score. It was disappointing that will all the pressure Queen's couldn't get an early goal.
We had to wait 20 minutes for the opener. The goal came right after Airdrie United's first flurry up field. A good save from Grant Hay, in goal for Queen's, allowed a counter attack. From the resulting corner Queen's managed to sneak the ball in at back post from Owen Ronald.
The second soon followed and it was a beauty. Another counter after an Airdrie corner. Grant Hay collected the ball and sending Kieran Blackwood clear. Kieran still had loads to do. He managed to beat his man and send an angled shot into top corner from 20yards. This was no more than Queen's deserved who had missed easier chances.
The third followed just before half time. Good play from Kieran again setting up Jordan McGuire to smash one high into the net from just inside the box.
No changes made for the start of the second half and Queen's kept the momentum going without further goals. A double substitution added another style to their play and helped create other chances.
The forth goal came not long after with a fine pass from Jordan McGuire on the right in behind defence for Daniel Hepburn to sweep home.
No more goals were scored. If not for the good goalkeeping by the Airdrie goalkeepers, the 17s would have scored more as they kept the play in the Airdrie half, keeping Airdrie on the back foot.
Coach Paul Ronald commented 'Got to be happy with a win but I'm sure the boys have more to give'.
