Queen's 17s took on Stranraer today at Lesser Hampden and had been hoping to score from some of their excellent build up play as that's all that was missing from the last game.
Queen's started strong and created numerous half chances but couldn't find their way past the strong back line. However with 10min gone the 17s opened the scoring - and what a goal it was! From easily 30yards out Alan Urquart picked the ball up and hit a screamer into top corner.
Queen's pressed for more but got caught out on the counter and gave away a penalty. This was disappointing as it was not long after they took the lead. Our goalkeepers have been having quiet games not being involved so how would Paul Cancaya cope? Brilliantly is the answer as he dived to divert the penalty kick away.
This was a bonus and you could feel the players take a lift from that and Queen's soon found themselves 2-0 up. A super pass up to Kieran Blackwood who turned and bent his shot into top corner from out side the box.
With this the 17s pushed to kill the game. Their penalty box play was missing the finishing pass and ultimately the score but we didn't need to worry about this today as Queen's soon scored another from out side the box. This time Luke Whelan got in on the act and powered forward to bend one high into the net.
3-0 at half time. Into the second half and a little change of shape and substitution Queen's pushed again to score. They where finding it tough to keep the forward play to a high standard and had to wait 25min into the half before they could put one of their chance away.
With the goals first half coming from outside the box, it was good to see a penalty box goal. Good play down the right from Owen Ronald and Keven Ruddy with the later firing across the 6 yard box for Daniel Hepburn to score.
The gates were now open and Queen's soon scored a further two goals. Again good work on the right from Owen slipping the ball to Tam Denholm who faked to shot before squaring to Stephen Hepbur to smash home the cut back.
Number six came from individual work from Kieran Kennedy driving into box and smashing the 6th goal home which the wee man fully deserved.
The drama surely was over at this point but in injury time Queen's gave away another penalty with a slack tackle. Would Paul be able to repeat his save? The answer was yes and he chose correct again to dive and save to keep his clean sheet.
Coach Paul Ronald commented after the game "A very pleasing performance and a special note on the quality of the goals scored with some being excellent team efforts".
