Sunday 31st January 2010
The 17s travelled north to Montrose today. The weather was sunny but very cold and an icy wind from the north made it feel that little bit cooler. The pitch is along the lines of Lesser Hampden although it was a good few year older.
Queen's found the surface to be difficult and with both teams slipping the coaches could see how difficult it would be for the boys.
The 17s started the game on the front foot and pressed the Montrose back line. Only some off side calls and some average efforts on goal stopped them from taking the lead.
Queen's did huff and puff a bit and did not look to comfortable with passing again letting them down. Would the missed chances come back to haunt them?
The answer, yes they would! Montrose took the lead after 30min. Slack play from Queen's allowing the Montrose player to get through 1 v1 and he slotted home.
This was sore as Queen's had been trying to press home their possession advantage.
Two minutes later Queen's gifted another with a slack passback to the goal keeper who kicked the ball against the striker and the ball rolled in.
2 nil down and at this point the coaches could see the boys struggling with the job at hand.
Into the half team talk, a few chosen words and 3 changes made the boys came flying out the blocks.
Within 30 seconds Queen's had tested the Montrose goalkeeper. It did however take 10min for the 17s to score their first goal . Excellent play between Kieran Kennedy and Daniel Hepburn for Kieran to fire home from the cross - you sense the boys are now in the mood.
10minutes later Queen's got the equaliser. This time Kieran Blackwood did the hard work to then slip Kennedy in to score his and Queen's 2nd.... game on.
The boys now started to show what they are about and peppered the Montrose goal. On 75minutes Queen's scored the third. A through ball from Owen Ronald found Daniel through on goal and he had the quality to square the ball for Kieran Blackwood to slot home.
The 17s weren't finished there and scored a fourth in 82minutes. Jordan McGuire finding Daniel Hepburn 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper, who rounded the goalkeeper to coolly slot home.
The 5th came minutes later when Daniel Hepburn slipped Owen Ronald in at the half way line and he ran into the Montrose box and slotted home the icing on the cake making it 5 2 to Queen's.
Coach Paul Ronald commented "The boys can take great credit and character from getting their sleeves rolled up and improving their standards. It was all agreed the first half was poor and it was up to them to show they can play. This they did with some style in the second half".
