19s squad

Sunday 7th March 2010

Elgin City 0-3 Queen's Park

The 17s travelled up north to sunny Elgin today leaving Lesser Hampden at 6:45am. Again the squad was being put under pressure as the team had no fewer than 6 players missing from the squad via the 19s or high school studies. This allowed Queen's to introduce Robert Whelan from the 16s and two trialists to the bench.

Queen's 17s in Elgin

The conditions in Elgin were first class for football although the pitch was heavy and a worry to the team. The boys started well and got into their game from the off. A few good efforts on goal well saved by the Elgin goalkeeper.

After 20min Queen's got their first. Great individual play from Kieran Kennedy beating two men and getting a shot away from 20yards. It took a deflection before nestling into the top corner 1-0 to Queen's.

Queen's now peppered the Elgin goal, hitting the woodwork twice in the next 10min. The next goal was on the cards and it was a beauty. Kieran Kennedy again beating his marker and slipping Kieran Blackwood in the box with the latter placing the ball under the advancing keeper.

Queen's then let a few other efforts slip but the same two player combined to set up and almost identical chance. This time Kieran Blackwood rounded the keeper before smashing the ball home.

No more goals in the game after that with the boys concentrating on a professional performance keeping the standards set high and bar some slack finishing and good Elgin goalkeeping there could have been more goals.

Coach Paul Ronald commented "The boys put in a very decent performance and dominated how the game was to be played in tough underfoot conditions".
