Queen's Park 4-1 Alloa Athletic

Queen's 17s entertained Alloa Athletic at Lesser Hampden today in the Scottish Football League Cup Final. A win today would give the 17s a glorious double having already won the League Championship. The two teams had drawn 3-3 earlier in the season so the boys knew this was going to be a tough game against our larger opponents.

Interview with coach Paul Ronald before the match

It was made even tougher as Queen's found themselves 1-0l down after only 5min as the Alloa striker turned quickest in the box to score.

This set back took the wind out of the 17s and they had to regroup. In a funny way it probably helped as all the boys upped their efforts and seemed to be more focused on the job in hand and they started to move the ball better.

It did take Queen's until the 20min after this set back to score. Good wide play finding Stephen Hepburn in behind and his left foot cross was brilliantly put home by Kieran Blackwood after a perfectly timed run.

Game on as they say and after 30min Queen's found themselves 2-1 up. Ross Barbour playing Owen Ronald in 1 v 1 with goal keeper and Owen managed to round the goalkeeper and score from the tightest of angles.

Interview with Paul Ronald at half time.

The half finished with no further goals although Queen's really should have had a few more before the break.

2-1 at half time is good but Queen's knew they needed change the shape a little to try and kill the game off.

In 56min they managed just that. A deep cross from Scott Gibson wide on the left that was missed by the Alloa goalkeeper allowing Daniel Hepburn to square to Ross Barbour who happily knocked home from a yard.

This was really game over but there was still plenty of time left on the clock so the boys needed to stay focused to Alloa's strengths and they also felt the team needed a further goal to allow them to enjoy the remainder of the game and day.

In 78min Queen's managed just that. It was a bizarre goal to finish with as Queen's worked a counter attack an Alloa defender lunged in to clear the danger but he only managed to hit the ball of the referee's face at the half way line. The ball breaking to Danny Hepburn who in turn played Kieran Blackwood in 1 on 1 and Kieran made no mistake to finish the game 4-1.

Coach Paul Ronald commented "A great effort from the boys today and for this season. They must be delighted with their efforts and style of play. In this league cup alone they have managed to score 30 goals in 5 games and only lost two so they totally deserve the plaudits and the cup well done from all the coaches".
