The 17s entertained Dumbarton in the semi final of the SFL league cup at Lesser Hampden today. It was a glorious warm day and with the conditions Queen's would need to be on top of their game.
Queen's started brightly and soon got to testing the Dumbarton goalkeeper after some fantastic mid field play to create. They had to wait however until 17 min when Kieran Blackwood was played in by Kieran Kennedy after an error by Dumbarton. Kieran made no mistake with the 1 v 1 to make it a deserved 1-0.
With their tails up Queen's pushed forward for more but could not find the way through the Dumbarton back line. Queen's did need to look sharp at the back a couple of times as they almost go caught out with a few punted balls up the park and a few slack patterns of play from defence. The half finished 1-0 to Queen's.
The 17s made a few changes at half time to try and get more urgency into their game.
Within 5min of the restart this paid off as Queen's went 2 up. Danny Hepburn beating his marker and getting to the by line. An excellent cut back for Kieran Kennedy to smash home from just inside the box.
With that extra cushion Queen's enjoyed the game more and in 60min added another goal.
A good run by Owen Ronald into the box stretching the Dumbarton defenders. A foul was made on Owen and Kieran Blackwood slotted home the penalty.
5min after that Queen's got awarded another penalty after the Dumbarton goalkeeper had fouled stopping a goal scoring opportunity.
Kieran Blackwood who had scored the previous one passed the ball to Daniel Hepburn but he blasted the penalty over the bar.
Queen's didn't need to wait long though for the 4th goal. Good wide play from Jordan Mcgiure playing Owen Ronald in behind and he found Danny Hepburn at the back post and he headed home to make it 4.
The boys looked hungry for more and pushed their levels a shade for the icing on the cake this came from Jordan Mcgiure as he controlled the ball on his chest and rifled the ball high into the top corner from the edge of the box to make it 5-0.
Coach Paul Ronald commented "A decent enough performance from the boys. They have played better but we cannot fault the boys for their high standards shown at times and their discipline. Also excellent in keeping a clean sheet and obviously scoring 5".
