Queen's Park 4-2 Montrose

Queen's played host to Montrose today in their fourth league match of the season. Last year Queen's won convincingly 2-0 at Montrose. Could we do the same again today?

A dull Lesser Hampden welcomed both team out onto the pitch. Queen's started poorly with passing going astray and players being pulled out of position by the fit and skilled Montrose side.

Queen's took the lead when a ball fired in from the left rebounded from a defender to land at the feet of Nadeen. The Queen's forward coolly chipped the Montrose keeper to open the scoring.

You would have thought that this would settle the young Queen's side. In fact they continued to fail to pass the ball and communicate with each other. Montrose took advantage of this indecision when the Queen's defence failed to spot the right winger. The ball was played to him and in acres of space he calmly fired the ball through McPherson to equalise.

The half-time whistle could not come quickly enough for Queen's. The coaches needed the time to re-focus the team.

Whatever was said in the dressing room had the desired effect on the Queens' players. They took the game to Montrose and were 2-1 up within a few minutes. A corner on the left by O'hara was bundled over the line by Green. This was soon followed by a third goal when a low cross from O'Hara was met by Lachlan at the edge of the box and he sweetly drilled it into the corner of the net.

Queen's were now beginning to compete and control the midfield. They scored a fourth goal when a cross by Sinclair was met, once again, by Lachlan and this time he headed the ball into the net at the near post.

The 19s should have been on easy street by now but just when they relaxed Montrose pulled one back. A poor bye kick by McPherson was forced forward by Montrose and the right winger shot a low ball across the advancing McPherson and into the far corner of the net.

There were no further goals and the final score was 4-2 to Queen's.

Coach Billy Ogilvie commented 'A very poor start to the game was compensated by a much better performance in the second half. The team still have to gel and these games will help us to do so.

That's 10 points so far this season. This time last year we only had three points after four games so things are improving. We have high expectations for this squad. They are fit, talented and keen to learn. Once they settle down I think they are capable of playing excellent football'.

The Queen's team was: G.McPherson, Baillie, Gallacher, Green, R.McPherson, Barbour, Lachlan, Blockley, O’Hara, Nadeem and Morton

The subs were: Afzal for blockley (60 mins), Murney for McPherson (60 mins) and Sinclair for Green (81 mins)

Subs not used: Graham, Jones, McGowan & Calkia

The 19s have no League match next week as it is the Scottish Youth Cup and they have a bye into the fourth round. The coaches are attempting to arrange a friendly. As soon as it is organised it will be posted on the website.
