Montrose 0-1 Queen's Park

Queen's Park 19s travelled east to play Montrose in the 3rd round of the SFA Youth Cup today. Queen's got a bye into the 3rd round due to their performance last year in reaching the 4th round. Montrose got a bye in the 1st round but had to beat East Fife in the second round. Queen's had beaten Montrose 4-2 at Lesser at the start of the season. Could they do the same at Links Park?

Queen's took the game to Montrose right from the kick-off. They dominated midfield and forced Montrose back into their half with sweeping attacking moves.

Queen's got two early corners and the second of which resulted in a goal. O'Hara whipped the corner in with his left foot and Scott Morton nipped in at the front post to head the ball home. 1-0 to Queen's.

Queen's continued to apply pressure on the Montrose defence. Only a combination of outstanding goalkeeping by the young Montrose keeper and poor finishing by the Queen's forward prevented the 19s increasing their lead.

Queen's took their foot off the gas for the last ten minutes for the first half and allowed Montrose to get back into the game. However no more goals and the first half finished 1-0 to Queen's

The coaches at half time emphasised the good start the 19s had made to the game and demanded a return to a pressing and passing game for the second half.

The 19s duly obliged and took control back from Montrose. Nadeem, who was not having one of his better games in midfield, was moved upfront and immediately upped his game. He had a number of good chances to increase Queen's lead. One in particular when he fired in a shot which struck the bar and bounced out. Blockly ran in and headed it past when it seemed easier to score.

Queen's kept the pressure up and had more chances to score but the score remained 1-0 to the final whistle. A comfortable result for Queen's

Coach Billy Ogilvie commented after the match "A good all round performance by us today .Although the scoreline doesn't match the performance. We should have won by more. A special mention to a new player - Ian Cook. He fitted in well today and showed that there is much more to come from him"

The Queen's team was: G. McPherson, Barbour, Gallacher, Lachlan, Murney, Cook, Afzal, Nadeem, O’Hara, Hangula & Morton

The subs were: Blockley for Hangula(58mins)

Subs not used: R.McPherson, Jones & Hay

Queen's 4th round opposition will be Dundee United. The match will be played in Dundee on Sunday 6th December.
